The food flask is very good at what it does, keeping your food hot or cold during a full day of hiking or travelling. It is a well made, tough, compact bit of kit, and with a volume of 470ml it can easily accommodate a Chicken and Mushroom King Pot Noodle (the greatest of all pot noodles) with room to spare.
Like most flasks, the lid can double up as a cup or bowl, you also get a sturdily made but poorly designed foldable spoon, which when not in use is stowed on the screw down top where it snaps securely into place. The lid is wide opening which makes soup, stews and pot noodles hassle free, and cleaning a breeze. The flask is double wall insulated and (according to Thermos) keeps food/drink hot for 9 hours or cold for 14 hours. This is the first food flask I’ve used so I was interested to see how it would measure up to the stay hot time of 9 hours stated by Thermos, so I conducted my own test using a cup a soup, I went for Broccoli and Cauliflower (the greatest all cup a soup flavours). With hot water poured in, and top screwed down, I left the food flask sitting on the kitchen counter for 9 hours. On returning 9 hours later to examine the results, I was very pleasantly surprised to find my cup soup was still hot and very tasty! So hats off to Thermos’ for the accurate stay hot time, two 👍👍 up for them.
I used the flask over the course of 4 weeks while away at work, and apart from a couple one negatives I was very impressed. If you’re right handed it will work perfectly and life with the food flask will be good, if on the other hand you’re a lefty like me (see what I did there) then using the spoon will cause some annoyance. When using the spoon left handed, it has a tendency to fold inwards into its storage position, this is due to the lack of a bracket on the left hand side of the spoon handle. This isn’t a show stopper by any means, just annoying if you’re a lefty. A small bracket, latch or locking mechanism along the left side of the handle would have prevented any unintentional folding.
The Good:
- Keeps food warm for hours.
- Good size and design
The bad:
- The spoon should be better.
Sum Up
The Thermos food flask is a good piece of kit, perfect for taking a hot snack with you on a day of hiking. The only downside is the poorly designed spoon.
